At long last, we reach the end of season nine of Stargate SG1. Oh, how I wish they'd decided to finish at season eight. This season has been exceptionally terrible. Before I hammer on about its faults, I should probably give a bit of balance.

THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN GOOD ABOUT SEASON NINE OF STARGATE SG1

Lexa Doig
Complete hottie. Unfortunately, she hasn't been in all of the episodes. She could be walking around babbling doctor talk all day for all I care. Nuts to Stargate travel; just have her curing people of alien diseases all episode long.

THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN CRAP ABOUT SEASON NINE OF STARGATE SG1

Everything that's not Lexa Doig
Even the really likable characters like Daniel Jackson and Samantha Carter have become incredibly boring and drab. They're just thoroughly uninteresting characters now. They saved the galaxy once; everything's become old hat. Landry is a character devoid of nearly all depth and played by a guy who looks suspiciously like Rigel from Farscape. Speaking of which, we seem to have acquired most of their characters. Mitchell is a carbon-copy of Crichton. Vala isn't significantly different to Sun (OMG! A woman! Who wears tight black clothing! And has guns! Original!). The second they start using oh-so-very-witty 'alien' swearwords is the day I flick it off. The Ori suck as a 'Big Bad' (how convenient that Merlin was building an anti-Ori weapon. How convenient that they discovered references to this weapon just as the Ori fleet were leaving!). In short, just about everything to do with this series has sucked majorly.

Thankfully, Atlantis is coming soon.

Let's face it. Late night television bites. It bites so hard that only one sort of programme can rightfully be screened: scifi. Well, scifi or weiro adverts trying to sell anti-acne cream. One time, I was able to flick between two channels which had the same advert being played about five minutes out of sync. Oh, what a fun evening that was.

It should be little surprise then that quiz shows tend not to succeed in the timeslot. It also made watching science fiction/fantasy shows on free-to-air television quite difficult. Poor Midnight Zoo. It seems odd that we managed to get rid of the abomination that was that odd fellow, the skanky looking chick and that Angie lass (hotness be her name) only to get Power Rangers Time Force as a replacement. I feel like I've been ripped off. I really do. If all you're going to do is screen Power Rangers, I want Angie back. The banal questions and the pointless time-filling is worth it.

Heads up, ye Star Trek fans, there isn't much left to the series. Tonight's episode basically starts the countdown to the season finale.

Hello and welcome to the inaugral post on aus_scifi_guide. As most of you probably know, science fiction and fantasy shows are treated rather awfully by free-to-air television. This community was designed for the benefit of Australian LJ users who wish to know when to set their VCRs. The net is cast fairly broadly, as you can see from the above. Austin Powers isn't really scifi/fantasy, but it has a few of the themes and so made the cut. The Mummy Returns is fairly awful, but it does have Patricia Velasquez. I'm fairly sure I'll be writing essays with the television on mute.

I also hope to add a small opinion piece to the end of the listing each week. While it's likely to consist mostly of bitching about how terrible the current season of SG1 is (Lordy, it's terrible. Not even a hottie like Lexa Doig can make this season interesting), it might wander on to other related topics depending on my mood. Hopefully, you'll enjoy voicing your own opinion on the matter. Heaven knows that there are enough weirdoes in the world who think that the Ori are a really cool enemy. They're wrong, of course, but it might provide for an interesting conversation or two.

In the future, I hope to provide a little more information about the episodes being screened (title of the episode, rating, and whether or not it's worth watching, perhaps). For the moment, I'll start small so that it only takes about ten minutes for me to do a post each week.
